44-42 BC AV Gold Stater ICG MS63 *NEW* Greek, 44-42 BC, Thracian Kings AV Gold Stater, (17 mm). A well struck and well centered choice uncirulated specimen. This gold stater is shrouded in mystery; who actually issued it and why? It was struck between 44-42 BC. Most historians ascribe its production to the infamous Brutus (assassin of Julius Caesar), who produced these from gold given to him by the widow of a Thracian king. The design copies one used by Brutus when he was a coiner in Rome, and is thought to portray him as the middle of three figures on the obverse. The legend on the obverse reads "Koson," the name of a king who had died about 70 years earlier. This was probably done to disguise the real origin of these coins, which were used to fund the Republican army in its civil war with Augustus Caesar (Octavian). In 42 Augustus prevailed and Brutus "fell on his own sword" (literally). $1500.00

Cleopatra Thea (Greek: which means "Cleopatra the Goddess") (ca. 164–121 BC) was the ruler of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire. She ruled Syria from 125 BC after the death of Demetrius II Nicator. She eventually ruled in co-regency with her son Antiochus VIII Grypus, who poisoned her in 121 or 120 BC. Cleopatra Thea was a daughter of Ptolemy VI of Egypt and Cleopatra II. $3750.00
